2010 Budget Update

Dear Friends:
 
Last week, Governor Quinn presented his budget proposal to the General Assembly for Fiscal Year 2011, which begins July 1 of this year. He proposed about $2 million in cuts from state operations, education, health and human services and pensions. The Governor also suggested that the state borrow about $4.7 billion to re-finance the state’s debt at a lower rate, and carry over $6.3 billion in debt into next year’s budget.

Fall 2009 Community Advisory Meetings

(November 7, 2009 - CHICAGO) Representative Deborah L. Mell's community advisory meetings, which took place in late October and the first Tuesday of November, brought together several community members who were interested in sharing solutions and presenting their concerns for key issues impacting the district.

"I appreciate having a one-on-one dialogue with people who live in the community," said Representative Mell. "This is our home and the diverse input from community members is key to making a lasting difference."

I am pleased to announce two exciting initiatives kicking off this fall. The first is the 40th district’s first annual There Ought to Be a Law essay contest. Now underway, this contest focuses on how laws are developed and asks students (grades 6–12) who live in the district to write an essay about what they believe “ought to be a law.”
