National Runaway Switchboard
Between 1.6 and 2.8 million youth run away in a year. The mission at the National Runaway Switchboard is to help keep America’s runaway and at-risk youth safe and off the streets. Funding for the hotline is provided in part through funding from Family and Youth Services Bureau in the Administration for Children and Families, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
IL Automated Victim Notification System
The Illinois Automated Victim Notification System provides victims and concerned citizens with a toll-free number (1-800-228-3368) they can call for up-to-date information on the custody and/or case status of an offender. Illinois AVN operates through interfaces with the jail booking system, the Illinois Department of Corrections, the Illinois Department of Human Services, and circuit court clerks throughout the state.
Legal Aid Assistance
The Illinois Equal Justice Foundation is a non-profit organization that advocates for and distributes the state appropriation for civil legal aid. There are legal aid resources available in the district. There is no guarantee that these program can take every case referred to them.
Gangs in the District
Recent news in the neighborhood has highlighted gang violence occurring near Volta Elementary School, Roosevelt High School and in certain "hotspots." At CAPS meetings in the 17th Police District, officers are working with community members to increase safety. They are encouraging community members to call 911 to report suspected crime and to call 311 to report graffiti.
17th District Graffiti Alert
The 17th District is developing a graffiti database. If you see anything illegally performing graffiti, please call 911.
If you observe any graffiti:
- Take a picture (camera phone photos are acceptable)
- Note the address, date and time
- Email the information and photos to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or drop off to the 17th District at 4650 N. Pulaski Rd., CAPS office
- Call 311 to have graffiti removed and have the following information ready:
- Is the graffiti on the front, rear, side or garage?
- Is the graffiti on wood, brick, painted brick or unknown?
- Is the graffiti over 6 feet up (yes/no)?
