Proper Disposal of OTC and Prescription Drugs
No drugs down the drain! Do not flush! Do not pour!
Recent United States Geological Survey studies have found traces of painkillers, estrogen, antidepressants, blood-pressure medicines, etc. in water samples from 30 states. Studies have linked hormone exposure to reproductive defects in fish, and environmental exposure to antibiotics to the development of drug-resistant germs.
The Illinois EPA strongly advises prescriptions or over-the-counter medications should not be flushed down the toilet or sink. Follow these guidelines to dispose of these medications properly:
- Check with your police department to see if they have a drug collection program
- Check to see if your community has a household hazardous waste program that collects prescription medication
- Throw them in the trash in a sealed bag containing an undesirable substance such as kitty litter or coffee ground and be sure to remove all labels
