Proper Disposal of OTC and Prescription Drugs

Public Health

No drugs down the drain! Do not flush! Do not pour!

Recent United States Geological Survey studies have found traces of painkillers, estrogen, antidepressants, blood-pressure medicines, etc. in water samples from 30 states. Studies have linked hormone exposure to reproductive defects in fish, and environmental exposure to antibiotics to the development of drug-resistant germs.

The Illinois EPA strongly advises prescriptions or over-the-counter medications should not be flushed down the toilet or sink.  Follow these guidelines to dispose of these medications properly:

  • Check with your police department to see if they have a drug collection program
  • Check to see if your community has a household hazardous waste program that collects prescription medication
  • Throw them in the trash in a sealed bag containing an undesirable substance such as kitty litter or coffee ground and be sure to remove all labels

  • Prescription Drop Box at Area Police Stations
Expired and unused pharmaceuticals can be disposed of in drop boxes at the five Chicago Police Department Area Centers. By using the police facilities as a drop-off location, the controlled substances will be deposited safely and kept under observation by law enforcement until they are destroyed.
    The centers are located at:
    • 5101 S. Wentworth Ave.
    • 727 E. 111th St.
    • 2452 W. Belmont Ave.
